A visit to the Dominican Republic is perhaps not complete without a visit to its capitol, Santo Domingo. If you’re interested in history and culture or just want to see “where it all started”, then this excursion is a must for you.

Santo Domingo dates back to the time of discovery. When Christopher Columbus first came to the island of Hispaniola in 1492, he arrived on the north coast of the island. His brother, Bartholomew founded the Santo Domingo in 1496 on the east side of the Ozama River and 6 years later it was moved to the west side where it stayed.

Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. Back then, it was the headquarters for the Spanish colonial rule in the so-called New World. In Santo Domingo you’ll find the first university, cathedral, castle, monastery and fortress of the New World and many sites still remain to this day. The Cathedral is still in use and is located in the heart of the Colonial Zone, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On this excursion your tour guide will show you the most important sights of Santo Domingo. You’ll also go for a scenic drive along the ocean on the Malecon and get a view of some impressive building like the Fine Arts Palace, the National Theater and the Presidential Palace.

We’ll have lunch at a typical Dominican restaurant and enjoy some lively music and unique entertainment.

After lunch, you’ll have a little time to explore and go shopping on the city’s main shopping street El Conde and hunt for great local arts & crafts, souvenirs, etc.

A few stops are included along the way e.g. to use the restrooms, for a few photo opps and to buy a few last minute souvenirs.
