Casa de Campo Resort & Villas is the most exclusive resort and luxury residential area in the Caribbean – a 7,000-acre community in the city of La Romana on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic.
This tropical playground features a unique array of amenities, including an expansive marina, tennis and polo facilities, a world-class shooting center, three championship golf courses—including Pete Dye’s masterpiece and top-ranked golf course, Teeth of the Dog.
Casa de Campo is also home to a variety of gourmet dining options, fantastic bars, and the one-of-a-kind 16th century replica Mediterranean village, Altos de Chavón.
Casa de Campo began in the late 1960s when La Romana was home to the single largest sugar-producing mill in the world. Owned by the Gulf+Western empire, the mill was a major employer in the area. But executive Alvaro Carta knew there was potential for more in La Romana, so he set out to create a new industry—tourism.
Alvaro Carta knew that no Caribbean resort would be complete without a stunning golf course, so he called in the best of the best, Pete Dye. After searching the nearby countryside for the perfect location to build the course, Pete Dye was inspired by the sweeping views and stunning coastline near the sugar mill. In 1971, the 18-hole golf course Teeth of the Dog opened with 7 holes directly in front of the Caribbean Sea.
In 1974, the Casa de Campo resort opened as an executive retreat for Gulf+Western employees. Many improvements and additions continued to be made to the resort: Polo and tennis were introduced, and The Links golf course opened. La Romana International Airport was built to accommodate guests arriving via private plane, and construction began on a village to celebrate the culture and art of the Dominican Republic, Altos de Chavón.
In the late 1980s Casa de Campo was sold to the Central Romana Corporation and underwent a new phase of development and renovations. Dominican designer Oscar de La Renta lent his talents to create a unique and inviting ambiance and many more amenities were added like a sporting clays facility. In 2011, the hotel underwent another sweeping US$ 40 mill. renovation phase to bring it to the luxurious standard that it holds today.
Today, Casa de Campo is considered the Caribbean’s premier tourist destination and one of the world’s elite resorts. It is no wonder that so many prominent guests, incl. past U.S. Presidents and A-list celebrities often choose Casa de Campo for their vacation in the Caribbean. This is truly paradise, as we hope you will also soon come to see, feel and experience.
